How I Dared to Be Free

On this special Mindful Monday, Martin Luther King Jr Day, I want to share with you a Dynamic Core confession.

I used to dance, I was a dance concentration at Sarah Lawrence College, and I used to fly, I taught hang gliding on sand dunes in Kitty Hawk, NC for 5 summers seasons.

But lately I haven't seen myself as a dancer or as a pilot.

I have been limiting my belief of what I physically can do to only what feels currently familiar, such as Pilates, running, surfing, Yoga & spinning.

I have had a dream for years of flying and dancing in the air.

I was sharing this dream with my best friend the other day and she was encouraging me to go to a special aerial dance class where I could bring this dream to a reality.

I have to confess that I was afraid that I wouldn't be able to do it.

I had this loud conversation in my head about why I wasn't fit enough, my core wasn't strong enough, that I don't have the coordination, that I just would not be able to…

This negative conversation was so loud that I have been letting it hold my dream back for almost 12 years.

Yeah that's right 12 YEARS!!!!!

And it's not because the opportunity hasn't been there. There have been plenty of opportunities.

I have just had a fear that I would not know how to do it.

Last Friday, I finally danced in the air! It was incredible and I am forever grateful that I dared to be free!

I finally took a small step forward, and went to a class where they taught me how to dance in the air by a harness.

What brought me out of my fear and towards my dream?

These simple steps:

  1. I shared my dream with someone I trust

  2. I accepted a suggested resource to support my dream

  3. I reached out to the resource (Grounded Aerial)

  4. I attended a class with faith that I would receive what I was looking for

  5. I let go of the outcome and just let myself enjoy the experience

This Martin Luther King Jr. quote really speaks my mind:
" Faith is taking the first step - even when you don't see the whole staircase."
-MLK Jr

What is a dream that you have been putting off for yourself and your body? Share it with someone and see what action you can take towards it.
